In my third (and final!) Top 100 I’m putting aside both approaches in favour of a new method that’s inspired on the work of scientometricians from the last decade. Broadly speaking, citation performance is different by discipline, format and age (just like altmetrics!) and researchers have sought to normalize these variations by developing field-normalized metrics. Examples include the Field-Weighted Citation Index (FWCI), the Relative Citation Ratio (RCR) and the Field Citation Ratio (FCR).
